FAQs

Functional Capacity Assessment: your questions answered

Common questions about FCAs from NDIS participants, families and support coordinators across Liverpool and Western Sydney.

What is a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA)?

An FCA is an occupational therapy assessment that looks at how you manage everyday activities and the supports that could help you live more independently. The findings are summarised in a written report that is often used for NDIS planning and plan reviews.

Who needs a Functional Capacity Assessment?

You may benefit from an FCA if you are applying for NDIS funding, preparing for a plan review, or need clear evidence of how your disability affects daily life. Support coordinators, planners, GPs and allied health professionals often request one to support fair planning decisions.

What happens during an FCA?

The occupational therapist talks with you about your daily life, observes how you manage specific tasks, and may use standardised assessment tools. With your consent, they may also speak with family, carers or other professionals before preparing a detailed report.

What areas of daily life does an FCA assess?

An FCA looks at practical everyday tasks such as self care, mobility and transfers, household tasks, communication, social interaction, community access and safety. The aim is to show what you can do independently and where extra support would help.

Will the NDIS fund my FCA?

An FCA may be funded under your NDIS plan, depending on your plan, your goals and how your funding is managed. Funding is not guaranteed, so we recommend checking with your support coordinator or NDIS planner before booking.

Who is qualified to complete an FCA?

Your assessment is completed by a registered occupational therapist who is qualified to assess everyday functioning and recommend practical supports. Occupational therapists are registered with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia through AHPRA.

How long does it take, and when will I get the report?

An FCA is usually completed across one or more sessions, followed by a written report once your therapist has reviewed all the information. Timeframes vary with your needs, so we confirm what to expect when you book.

How do I arrange a Functional Capacity Assessment?

You can arrange an FCA by contacting Youcentric Care Group directly, or by asking your support coordinator, GP or allied health professional to send a referral. Call 1300 316 664 or email [email protected] and our team will guide you through the next steps.
