Functional capacity assessment guides
Plain-English guides on functional capacity assessments and how they are funded under the NDIS.
How your assessment is funded and priced
We accept NDIS (plan-managed and self-managed), Home Care Packages, CHSP, Medicare (with a GP referral) and private clients.
A functional capacity assessment is charged by the hour, at the NDIS occupational therapy price of $193.99 per hour in 2026-27. Your total depends on how many hours the assessment and report take. For NDIS participants, an FCA is generally funded from the Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living budget, depending on your plan. For a full breakdown, see how much an NDIS OT assessment costs and the 2026-27 NDIS pricing changes.
The assessment tools we use
Our occupational therapists use validated, standardised assessment tools, chosen to suit each person’s age and situation. Depending on the referral, these may include:
Standardised tools are selected on clinical judgement and are not all used in every assessment.
What’s in your FCA report
Every functional capacity assessment report is written to support fair, evidence-based decisions. It typically includes:
- Assessment summary and relevant background or history.
- Standardised tool results, where used, with plain-English interpretation.
- Functional domain ratings across self-care, mobility and transfers, domestic tasks, community access, communication, and cognition.
- Barriers and risks affecting daily functioning and safety.
- Clear recommendations for supports, therapy, assistive technology or home modifications.
- Evidence aligned to the NDIS reasonable and necessary criteria, to support planning and reviews.
Which assessment do I need?

Functional capacity assessments by condition
Different disabilities defeat different kinds of assessment. These guides set out what we look at, and why, for the conditions where the functional picture is most often misread.
How we assess
We assess in your own home rather than over a video call, gather evidence from several independent sources, use validated standardised tools. Every recommendation is written to a published evidence standard. Read our full assessment methodology.
